Well, what can I say about this one? One Magic Christmas, hmm…. this is a hard one, let me give it a go at it. The first thing I have to say is, even if this movie is bad or good, Harry Dean Stanton is ALWAYS good. If it’s a small part as himself in Two and a half Men, a janitor who witnesses the Hulk fall through a roof in Avengers, or a Christmas angel in One Magic Christmas, the man always delivers his performance with a magnificence that knows no bounds. Just a fantastic actor through and through. And then we have Mary Steenburgen. Never before have I seen a grown woman look so childish and naive (in a good way) than her. A great actress in her own right.
But what about the movie? Well, it’s nothing special at all (at least nowadays) about this movie. Sure, back then, it may not have been as usual a plot, but now….
A movie about someone having to show someone else the true meaning of Christmas? Yeah, that sounds just like something you have seen quite a few times, doesn’t it? Yeah, I thought so! But… this was way back in 1985 so it’s likely it wasn’t as used as it is now, I don’t know. Anyway, I’m rambling….
The overall feel of this movie is pretty gloomy, but it does have a sense of Christmas from start to finish so it’s definitely a Christmas classic, but as far as I’m concerned, it’s not the best classic there is, so this is a film that won’t be watched next year, or the year after that….. unless my girlfriend wants to watch it, but that’s a different plot device all together.
Tomorrow is the 21st, and with Christmas rampantly closing in, I’ll be taking a look at some of my own personal favorites through the years, with The Polar Express tomorrow, but until then…..
